What are Missional Villages?

Missional Villages are villages that are created by Hopeline Christian Society that will bring a western standard of living with jobs, medical and housing facilities to mostly developing or 3rd world countries.

Those who live in or near these villages will experience a better standard of living with training, education and better paying jobs. They will also have amenities that they are not normally accustomed to such as: sewage and toilets, running water, electricity, kitchens, rooms and clean yards for their children, well maintained streets, etc. The villages themselves will be available for Christians who live in poverty, want Christian discipleship and a better life for themselves and their families.

The Hopeline Christian Society villages will have training in the trades such as construction, technology and the hospitality industries and whatever other areas that are needed in a country. The training and skill expectations will be higher than what is normal in poorer countries. We will do this so as to raise the standard of safety and longevity of things built or developed. The villages will develop businesses for training; long term job security and a growing income to support the villages and ministers and missionaries in the field around the world.

These villages will be mostly built by people native to the country, but will be trained and supervised by mostly westerners with the skills to train and oversee the projects.

Haiti is our first country…

.Hopeline Christian Societies first village in Haiti will be completely energy self-sufficient with clean solar energy by CleanCompassion. At our "Youth With A Mission" base in Haiti we had electricity about 8 hours per day and half of that is from our generator and half from the country with a cost of almost 4 times that of the US. We want to help set a standard for clean energy and show others that it is possible to do especially in 3rd world warm climate countries at a lower long term cost.

As well 90% of Haitians have no clean water, no sewage systems or toilets and no yards to play in. Those who work at Hopeline Christian Society will be paid enough ($30 to $100 per day instead of $1 to $3 per day) to purchase property just outside our village and be able to build a proper house. Hopeline Christian Society will provide at no charge clean water, electricity and underground sewage systems to those who have property outside our village allowing them to have kitchens, bathrooms with toilets and clean homes with better hygiene and healthier families.

Haiti has an unemployment rate of 85% with the average income of less than $1,000 per year or $2-$3 a day. One would think than with this amount of poverty there would be a low cost of living. However, this is not the fact. It costs about 2 to 3 times higher to live in Haiti as it does to live in the United States. This is part of the reason it is so difficult to get a head in 3rd world countries like Haiti. We will pay Haitians $30-$100 per day depending on the jobs that they do.

Why?

Everything must be imported!

Everything must pay triple taxes and extra expensive shipping. This would include taxes from the country of origin, Haiti government import taxes and corrupt extortion taxes from government employees wanting bribes and holding hostage imported items. For example a $4,000 vehicle in the US would cost the $4,000 in the US and an extra $1200 in shipping (from Miami to Haiti) and another $800 - $2000 in taxes to get into Haiti. It gets worse if it is a new vehicle because they think you are rich and will pay a lot more to get your vehicle since it is already in Haiti. If you do not pay it can take years to get your stuff and then have to pay high storage fees anyway that will cost just as much as the extortion rates. I once (only once, I was desperate) bought Costco nacho chips that are about $3.50 in the US and paid almost $12 in Haiti.

Poor countries like Haiti need jobs more than handouts. Do you remember the story? Give a person a fish and he will eat for a day, teach him to fish and he will never go hungry. It is the same in 3rd world countries. If you give them food today they will still be hungry tomorrow, give them a job today and they will never be hungry and have a nice place to live for them and their family, which usually includes children, parents, brothers and sisters and sometimes aunts and uncles. So jobs are more important than handouts, although handouts are still important until they have jobs.

Haiti has virtually no tourism and is in desperate need of it to bring wealth into the country through earning it themselves. Hopeline Christian Societies first venture will be to build and develop a western style resort and convention center that will have the distinct purpose of promoting missions and tourism in Haiti. The resort and convention center will provide a safe and secure place with a family environment that Christians can come for a holiday, a spiritual retreat or conventions while helping the poor and supporting ministers and missionaries around the world.

The resort guests will have the ability be involved in missions while in Haiti if they want to at reduced rates. There will be opportunities for guests to get involved in missions projects with Hopeline Christian Society or other organizations if they desire to or they may want to try a multi-mission tour while at the resort. They may just want to have holiday or business convention with scuba diving, jet skiing or just reading a book on the beach. No matter what their desires are we will provide a flavor of a Haitian/Caribbean resort with the comfort and amenities of a moderately luxurious resort or hotel that would be expected in a western culture that will rival any Mexican or Caribbean resort.

Haiti’s coastline is as nice as any Caribbean Island. It is probably one of the most hidden beautiful places in the world. Unfortunately it is mostly hidden by Haitian garbage. Haitians have very little thought of keeping their streets or beaches clean. We want to help change that. First with the resort and convention center and then with a recycling plant that will encourage Haitians to put away their garbage and to recycle and profit off of things that can be recycled. Haitians like to turn anything into money for food.

Haiti has so much poverty because it is a very expensive place to live. The reason everything is imported as mentioned above is because there is no manufacturing in the country. Almost everything must be imported including most of their food. This is why we want to build a food manufacturing plant to provide more jobs, more exportation of Haitian resources and a greater variety of food at a lower cost for Haitians. We also want to pay those in poverty in Haiti and other 3rd world nations $30-$100 a day or about 10 - 20 (still much less than in first world nations) times more than they normally make in their own country.

All of these things will help to improve the lives of the poor. But the most important thing is discipleship. 98% of all Haitians have heard of Jesus. Most have at one time or another have accepted Him into their lives. However, they have not been taught how to live for Christ. It is not good enough to give food and jobs without teaching them how to live for Christ. Discipleship takes time and effort.

There are a lot of people willing to sacrifice their lives back home to help but they need the financial and prayer support to be able to do it. Haiti is begining to change and this is a very good and God ordained time to make this move in Haiti. And it is not only Haiti that needs the help. It is all 3rd world countries. Hopeline Christian Society expects to start our second country within three years and six in six years.
